Why the Best Producers Rarely Panic.

Let’s be honest.

If you’ve ever watched a mom leave the house with two kids, a nappy bag, snacks, water bottles, a favourite toy, spare clothes, sunscreen, and somehow still arrive on time looking put together… you’ve already witnessed elite production management.

People often ask us what makes a great producer. The funny thing is, people think producing is about spreadsheets, call sheets and colour-coded schedules. Sure, those help. But producing is really about people. It’s about reading a room, thinking three steps ahead, making a hundred decisions in a minute and finding solutions when the original plan falls apart.

That’s just Tuesday morning for a mom.

Before most people have had their second coffee, she’s already packed lunches, remembered school dress-up day, booked appointments, found the missing shoe, administered medication, negotiated with a toddler over breakfast, kissed away tears and somehow still made it to work on time.

That’s world-class producing.

So, what are the skills needed to be a great producer?  Organisation? Absolutely. Communication? Essential. Problem-solving? Non-negotiable. Staying calm under pressure? Correct.

Who does that every day without a call sheet, production budget or a walkie-talkie? A mom.

At birth, you’re handed a tiny human and told, “Good luck.” From that moment on, you’re producing. You’re coordinating schedules, managing logistics, feeding the talent, packing contingency plans for your contingency plans, negotiating with very unreasonable stakeholders, working within impossible timelines, making a hundred decisions before 9am, and somehow still looking relatively put together.

That’s exactly what producing looks like.

The biggest lesson motherhood teaches isn’t how to multitask—it’s how to adapt. Plans change. Someone gets sick. A location falls through. The weather doesn’t cooperate. A client wants another option. A baby skips a nap.

You don’t have the luxury of freezing. You learn to think on your feet, solve the problem in front of you, and keep everyone moving forward.

At PRIMITIVE, we’ve seen firsthand how motherhood shapes the way we work. It sharpens our instincts. It teaches us to anticipate problems before they happen. It reminds us that people matter more than processes. It gives us empathy, resilience and the ability to lead with both confidence and compassion.

Don’t get me wrong, we’re not saying that only moms make great producers. To be clear, we’re saying motherhood builds skills that this industry desperately needs.

The ability to pivot without panic. To hold ten moving parts in your head at once. To make people feel seen while still delivering on the deadline. To find solutions when everyone else sees problems. To keep the show running, no matter what.

So shoutout to the moms who spend their mornings wiping sticky hands and their afternoons managing a production crew. To the women answering emails, with a sick baby at home during nap time. To the producers who know exactly where the spare batteries are because they also know exactly where the emergency snacks are. To the women proving every single day that motherhood doesn’t make you less capable. It makes you absolutely exceptional.
